Blood Components

The hematocrit ( Hct ) is a percentage ratio of the volume of red blood cells compared with the total volume of blood, as measured in an anticoagulated test tube after centrifugation (about 45%).

Liver Function Tests

ALT and AST are most prominent in liver hepatocytes, while GGT and alkaline phosphatase are most prominent in the walls of the bile ducts. Viral hepatitis, which damages the hepatocytes, initially causes high ALT and AST levels, while GGT, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin are only mildly elevated. With worsening of the hepatitis, liver swelling narrows the intrahepatic bile canals; bilirubin backs up and there's damage to the bile duct walls, resulting in rising of bilirubin, GGT, and alkaline phosphatase. Serum albumin levels can decrease due to impaired liver function, as the liver normally synthesizes albumin.

In contrast, a stone blocking the bile ducts results in high levels of alkaline phosphatase, GGT, and bilirubin, while AST and ALT rise only a small amount. This may relate to the different presence of these molecules in the liver versus the bile ducts. Serum albumin levels may initially remain normal but decrease with prolonged obstruction and liver damage.

Blood Collection Tubes

The type of tube used to draw blood depends on whether you want to examine whole anticoagulated blood or coagulated blood serum.
